A cool little binary-oriented newsreader with a simple interface. Allows for multiple server connections and assignment of folders for each newsgroup to better manage your downloads.
Download GrabIt from the official website here.
After the installation file has been downloaded, double click to launch the install. Continue through the installation guide to install GrabIt.
When installation has finished launch GrabIt from the newly created desktop icon, or from the Windows Start Menu. In the Start menu you will find GrabIt in the "GrabIt" folder.
When GrabIt loads you'll notice in the left menu under "My GrabIt" Default server. This is where we want to configure GrabIt to work with our newly created Newsservers.net Usenet account.
Right click on Default Server and select "Server Properties". Enter the following information into "Server Properties" to configure GrabIt with Newsservers.net.
Hostname: news.newsservers.net
Account name: your_username
Password: your_password
Maximum allowed connections: 45
After configuring GrabIt server properties with your Newsservers.net account information select Ok. Now right click on "Default Server" and choose "Refresh Grouplist". This will download our list of over 100,000+ newsgroups into GrabIt.
For this tutorial we are going to find newsgroups related to cars. If you know the exact name of the group you can enter it in the field labeled "Only show groupnames that contain the word(s)" or you can enter keyword such as pictures autos.
When you've found a newsgroup that interests you double click it to add it to your personal group list. In this tutorial we've selected alt.binaries.pictures.autos
After the newsgroup has been added to your personal groups you'll notice it's listed under default server in the left menu. To get all the articles in the newsgroup right click on the newsgroup and choose "Full Update" or if you only want a portion of the articles choose "Incremental update"
GrabIt will then connect to our high speed servers and download the article headers. You can view the article headers in the "Articles" tab.
When you've located an article you want double click on it and GrabIt will connect and download the file to your computer. For example you'll notice in the image above "1929 Ford Roadster" at the top of the article list. To download this image all we do in GrabIt is double click the article and GrabIt will download the image to the assigned download folder.
The download folder in GrabIt can easily be viewed by clicking on "Download folder" in the top menu of GrabIt.
Congratulations, you've successfully configured GrabIt with our high speed servers.
